Another Saturday ! Following my test of the new beta of IE 5.5, I noticed some more crashes than normal on my Win 95 OSR-2 installation. Thus, I could find no other way than ( very late ) surrender and install Windows 98 ( I have resisted long enough ). To my surprise, IE 5.5 now works rock solid under Windows 98. And as a funny remark: In the "help", "about"-boxes in "My Computer" and "Windows Explorer" it now says "Windows Millenium" instead of "Windows 98". That thing didn´t occur under Windows 95. In fact: since I installed Windows 98 at Wednesday I haven´t had a single crash. And the OS and browser is very speedy. That looks as good foreseeings over the upcoming "Millenium". No big guess that there won´t be very many complaints over the new 9x OS. And as I have heard, that will also be the slogan: "It works".

One funny remark is that; I had no wish to once again reinstall all my software after my Windows 2000 tests. So I ( against all recommendations ) just installed Windows 98 right into the original Windows 95 folder. I know that should mean trouble, but in fact, all previously installed software works just perfect. AND is speedier than under Windows 95. I guess that Windows 98 have had more bad reputation than it rightfully earns. It really seems to be a much better OS than Windows 95.

Of course NT4 and Windows 2000 is very stable, but both lacks a good portion of both hardware and software support. A compromise necessary to be had, to keep system security (Which is not very important in a home environment, where one just want´s maximum compability ).

The Linux community have really made noice over Windows, but to be perfectly honest: Linux is practically USELESS and utterly time consuming for productive work, at it´s current stage ( YES, I have tested a few of the latest distributions, I like SuSE Linux best ). As cheap server software: O.K.. At home: Laugh out loud ! But I guess that Linux could be a reasonable desktop alternative in, mabe two years ( when they´ve sorted out the GUI, fixed an OLE model and provided decent graphics and font support plus got rid of the necessity to use the command line. And of course: A functional copy of Windows Explorer. Hmm, why not use Windows ? ). Anyway, it´s fun tweakin´around with Linux, but one can´t say it´s the least productive in any obvious way.
And, of course, all my prime music creation software is designed for Windows 98 so I guess I will be stuck until "Millenium" arrives ( Windows 2000 will just have to few apps working under it ).
